On the evening of June 17, 2018, in Clarksville, Tennessee, a senseless act of violence claimed the life of 22-year-old Taren Lyles, an African American woman. Lyles was seated in the driver's seat of her car near the intersection of Main Street and 11th Street when multiple gunshots were fired into the vehicle. Tragically, her two young children, aged one and two, were in the backseat at the time of the shooting. Miraculously, the children were physically unharmed.
Lyles sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide continued for three years. Friends and family mourned the loss of the young mother, remembering her as a loving and devoted parent. The community was left searching for answers and hoping for justice for Taren and her children. The Clarksville Police Department's Special Operations Homicide Unit diligently worked the case, eventually leading them to a suspect.
In July 2021, a breakthrough in the case came when detectives presented their findings to the Montgomery County Grand Jury. The grand jury returned a murder indictment for Mark Ellis, a 27-year-old man from Clarksville. Agents with the Special Operations Division took Ellis into custody on Kraft Street without incident. He was subsequently booked into the Montgomery County Jail on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and various weapons charges, bringing a measure of hope to a family and community still grieving a profound loss.
