In the Edgehill area of Nashville on the night of August 24, 2018, Glen Young, a 59-year-old male, was at home watching television inside his apartment. Outside in the courtyard, a dispute erupted during a dice game, escalating to an exchange of gunfire. Hearing the commotion, Young went to his front door to see what was happening. As he opened it, he was struck in the chest by a stray bullet.
He was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
An investigation into the shooting continued for nearly two years. Detectives with the Midtown Hills Precinct eventually identified Mac Dobbins, then 45, as the individual who allegedly initiated the gunfire that led to Young's death. The investigation suggested that Dobbins was involved in the dice game when an argument broke out, and he fired shots across a parking lot at others involved. In what was determined to be self-defense, others fired back, and it was one of these stray bullets that tragically struck the innocent bystander, Glen Young.
In July 2020, Mac Dobbins was indicted on charges of first-degree murder and unlawful gun possession during the commission of a felony. He was subsequently arrested and jailed. Following the death of her husband, Tia Fitzpatrick-Young filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against the city's housing agency for $2 million, alleging they failed to provide a safe environment for residents and guests at the Edgehill Homes where the shooting occurred.
