On the evening of August 17, 2024, a dispute in a West Nashville apartment complex parking lot turned fatal, claiming the life of 25-year-old Christopher Rhodes, a Black male. Rhodes and his girlfriend were in the process of moving furniture into their new home at the Richland Hills Apartments on Maudina Avenue when the incident unfolded. The couple was confronted by an individual, leading to a heated argument that reportedly stemmed from pre-existing issues between the man and Rhodes.
The verbal confrontation quickly escalated into a physical altercation. In the midst of the struggle, multiple gunshots rang out, striking Rhodes. The suspect immediately fled the scene in a vehicle, leaving Rhodes critically injured in the parking lot. Tragically, Rhodes's young 3-year-old son was present and witnessed the violent event that would take his father's life. Emergency services were called to the scene just after 10 p.m., and Rhodes was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but he ultimately succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
For months, the case remained without an arrest, though homicide detectives with the Metro Nashville Police Department stated they were pursuing strong leads. The community and Rhodes's family waited for a break in the case, holding out hope for justice. That break came on April 24, 2025, when police arrested 41-year-old Terry Watters Jr. in connection with the fatal shooting. Watters was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm, bringing a new chapter to the tragic story of a young father's untimely death.
