In the autumn of 2018, a minor traffic incident tragically escalated, ending the life of 27-year-old Jose Luis Vergara. On the evening of September 23rd, Vergara was involved in a fender bender in a parking lot located at 2051 Antioch Pike in Antioch, Tennessee. An argument ensued between the male victim and the other driver involved in the collision. This verbal altercation took a fatal turn when the other driver produced a firearm and shot Vergara.
The investigation into the shooting continued for several years. Law enforcement identified Luis Vazquez as the suspected gunman. In November of 2022, a breakthrough in the case occurred. Vazquez, then 46 years old, was pulled over during a traffic stop on Murfreesboro Pike because he was driving without his headlights or taillights activated. During the stop, officers noted he smelled of alcohol and was in possession of a small quantity of cocaine.
Upon his arrest for DUI, it was discovered that Vazquez had outstanding warrants for homicide and aggravated assault in connection with the 2018 shooting death of Jose Vergara. Vazquez, who has also used the aliases Teodoro Ortiz and Jose Perez-Montelongo, was subsequently charged with the murder.
