A 34-year-old man, Billy Burson, was fatally shot in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on June 12, 2021. Burson, a Black male, was inside his pickup truck at a Mapco gas station on Brainerd Road early in the morning when the incident occurred.

Responding officers discovered Burson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Chattanooga Police Department, with assistance from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals, conducted the investigation into the homicide.

Authorities determined that three individuals were involved in the shooting. Two men, Garion Lewis, then 36, and Desmond McKevie, then 20, were arrested in connection with Burson's death. Both were charged with first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and were subsequently indicted by a grand jury. However, the charges against both Lewis and McKevie were ultimately dropped. Reports indicated that one suspect connected to the case remained at large.
