In the summer of 2021, the life of 17-year-old Braylon Murray, an African American male, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Memphis, Tennessee. On the afternoon of August 3, 2021, Braylon, a high school football player and aspiring rapper known as Bray Brizzle, was at a car wash on North Hollywood Street when he was shot and killed. The incident, which authorities later described as a robbery and shooting, left the community reeling and his family devastated.
Braylon was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a legacy of a kind-hearted young man who was known for his compassion and charitable spirit, often spending his holidays feeding the homeless.
The investigation into Braylon's murder led to the identification of two suspects, Jarquez Mallory and Ozar Odell Faulkner. Faulkner was the first to be apprehended on November 5, 2021. The search for Mallory extended into the following year, culminating in his capture by U.S. Marshals at a hotel in Stockbridge, Georgia, in 2022. Both men were initially charged with first-degree murder for their roles in the death of the promising teenager, whose grandmother, Sarah Carpenter, is a well-known education activist in Memphis.
In a significant development in the case, both Mallory and Faulkner accepted plea deals on December 2, 2024, avoiding a trial. Jarquez Mallory, identified as the gunman, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder and received a 15-year sentence in the Tennessee Department of Corrections. Ozar Odell Faulkner pleaded guilty to solicitation of aggravated assault, acknowledging his involvement in planning the crime. He was sentenced to a two-year term, with credit for the time he had already served since his arrest in 2021. In the wake of this tragedy, Braylon's mother founded The Braylon Murray Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about gun violence and providing scholarships to young people in the Memphis area, turning her profound grief into a force for positive change in the community.
