On a Sunday afternoon in April 2023, 16-year-old Jaylan Major was on his way to a new job he had just started the day before at an airport restaurant. His mother had dropped him off at the East Point MARTA station, a routine trip he was learning to navigate on his own. Moments later, the promising tenth-grade scholar and athlete, known for his bright smile and love of sports, was shot. He was rushed to a hospital where he later died.
The incident occurred on April 30, 2023, amidst a crowd of people heading to a Taylor Swift concert in downtown Atlanta.
The shooting stemmed from a prior dispute, according to MARTA police. Two teenagers, aged 15 and 18, were arrested in connection with Jaylan's death. The names of the suspects have not been publicly released. The 15-year-old was initially charged with voluntary manslaughter and possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18; however, this charge was later upgraded to murder. The 18-year-old suspect faces charges of simple battery and involuntary manslaughter.
The mother of the 15-year-old suspect has publicly stated that her son did not intend to shoot Jaylan. She claimed her son was being attacked by the 18-year-old and that Jaylan had joined in the assault. According to her account, her son pulled out a gun to deter his attackers, and it accidentally discharged during the struggle. She expressed that her son had been tormented by the older teen at school.
Jaylan's family remembers him as a happy person who loved to joke with his friends and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes traveling baseball team. They, along with his former football coaches, were left shocked and devastated by the sudden loss of a young man who had been receiving college scholarship offers and had a bright future ahead of him. His death has prompted calls from his loved ones and community members for an end to youth gun violence.
