On a Friday night that should have been filled with the typical excitement of a high school basketball game, tragedy struck in East Point, Georgia, cutting short the life of 15-year-old Mario Bailey. The male sophomore at Tri-Cities High School was shot and killed on February 9, 2024, near the school's campus following a game between Tri-Cities and Banneker High School. The evening had been charged with tension, with multiple fights breaking out as spectators were leaving the game.
It was in the midst of this chaos that Bailey was shot multiple times at a nearby railroad track off campus. Another student was also stabbed in the school's parking lot that same night, though it remains unclear if the two incidents were related.
Mario, his mother's only child, was described as a hardworking young man with aspirations of joining the military after graduation. His mother, Shanice Bailey, spoke of her profound loss, describing her son as her 'whole soul' and a 'beautiful soul' who was like sunshine. She had been in contact with him just minutes before he was killed. In the aftermath, she pleaded for witnesses to come forward with any information that could lead to the capture of her son's killer.
Following an investigation by the East Point Police Department, an arrest was made in connection with Mario Bailey's death. A juvenile, whose name has not been released due to his age, was taken into custody and charged with murder. The shooting reportedly stemmed from a dispute between Bailey and the suspect.
