On a tragic Tuesday in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 37-year-old Demetria Dortch was cut short in an act of workplace violence. The shooting occurred on October 12, 2021, at the East Lamar Carrier Annex, a United States Postal Service facility in the Orange Mound neighborhood. Dortch, a customer service supervisor, was fatally shot by a co-worker during a violent rampage.
The gunman was identified as 28-year-old Johntra Haley, a letter carrier for the postal service.
In addition to killing Dortch, Haley also shot and killed station manager James Wilson before turning the gun on himself. The incident, which unfolded inside the postal facility, left three postal employees dead, including the shooter.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the mother of the gunman, Tracey Haley, spoke out, claiming that her son had been bullied by his superiors at work. She described her son as a churchgoing person who was stressed and unhappy due to his treatment at the post office. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service confirmed that Haley had been employed since July of that year and that there were no prior complaints filed against him.
The tragic event prompted an outpouring of grief from the community. A vigil was held at Lewis-Davis Park in Orange Mound to honor the memory of Demetria Dortch. Friends, family, and community members gathered to remember a life taken too soon. The investigation into the shooting was handled by the FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Since the suspect died by suicide at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent trial.
