On February 26, 2015, Leah M. Bumpus, a 26-year-old Black female, was found deceased in Memphis, Tennessee. Her death was discovered at the Eden at Watersedge apartment complex located in the Fox Meadows neighborhood after police were called to perform a welfare check.
Upon entering the apartment, authorities found the bodies of Bumpus, another woman named Christual Johnson, and a man identified as Terry “T.J.” Barnes. All three individuals had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The initial investigation led law enforcement to consider the incident a double murder and suicide. Terry Barnes was identified as the suspect in the deaths of Bumpus and Johnson.
A cousin of Leah Bumpus, who was at the scene, described her as a "sweet girl" and confirmed that she had been dating Barnes. A neighbor living next door to the apartment where the incident occurred reported hearing a significant disturbance the evening before the bodies were discovered. The neighbor described the sound of a loud fight and something hitting the wall with enough force to move their own couch. It is believed that Terry Barnes took his own life after killing Bumpus and Johnson; consequently, no arrests were made in connection with this case.
