On a crisp December evening in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 15-year-old Phillexus Buchanan was tragically cut short. An African American female and a spirited 10th grader at Hamilton High School, she was known for her passion for cheerleading. On December 3, 2021, Phillexus was with friends at a gas station on Elvis Presley Boulevard, a seemingly ordinary end to a typical week.
The group had just left a high school basketball game, their laughter and conversation filling the car.
The night took a horrifying turn when a dark-colored Nissan pulled up alongside their vehicle. A barrage of gunfire erupted, shattering the evening's peace and irrevocably changing the lives of everyone present. In the aftermath of the senseless violence, Phillexus and her 16-year-old friend, Breunna Woods, a student at Wooddale High School, were pronounced dead. The shooting also left a 16-year-old and a 9-month-old baby injured, casting a dark shadow over the community. The incident was the third fatal shooting of a teenager at that same location in less than a year, highlighting a devastating pattern of violence.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Memphis Police Department launched an investigation. They located the Nissan, abandoned after the shooting, and released video footage of the incident to the public in an appeal for information. While the initial reports indicated that no arrests had been made, the families of the victims held onto hope for justice. In a significant development, a man was later accused in connection with the killings of the two teenagers and the injuries to the other two victims, with his bond set at $2 million. The community, deeply shaken by the loss of two young lives, came together for vigils and balloon releases to honor the memories of Phillexus and Breunna, as grief counselors were made available to support the grieving students and staff at their respective high schools.
