In the early hours of a December day in Memphis, Tennessee, a tragic sequence of events unfolded, leading to the deaths of two people and a subsequent murder indictment. The incident, which took place on December 6, 2021, claimed the life of 30-year-old Jeramy Edwards, an African American male, and his friend, 30-year-old Kenya Baskin.
The violence began shortly after midnight at Baskin's residence on Douglass Street.
Corey Lurry, 27, who was Baskin's former boyfriend, forcibly entered her home and began to physically assault her. Edwards, who was present at the time, attempted to intervene to protect his friend but was overpowered during the altercation. Lurry then dragged Baskin outside, continued the assault, and tried to force her into the trunk of his vehicle while threatening her life. The initial confrontation ended when Lurry fled the scene after Baskin indicated she was calling the police.
Approximately five hours after the initial assault, residents in the vicinity of Prescott and Douglass, and Highland and Douglass, reported hearing gunshots. Later that morning, around 8:15 a.m., police were dispatched back to Baskin's home. There, they discovered a grim scene. Both Jeramy Edwards and Kenya Baskin were found deceased, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Baskin was located in the driver's seat of her car in the driveway, while Edwards was found on the ground nearby.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly identified Corey Lurry as the primary suspect. He was taken into custody shortly after the discovery of the bodies. Following the investigation, a grand jury indicted Lurry on a series of charges related to the incident. These charges included two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Jeramy Edwards and Kenya Baskin, as well as aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, domestic assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. After his indictment, Lurry was held without bond. The case is being handled by the Shelby County District Attorney's Special Prosecution Unit, which focuses on seeking maximum sentences for repeat felony offenders.
