In the spring of 2021, the life of 16-year-old James 'JP' Parnell Jr., a promising male track star from Raleigh Egypt High School in Memphis, Tennessee, was tragically cut short. On May 5th, Parnell was visiting the 14-year-old daughter of 59-year-old John Moore at their home. Moore arrived to find Parnell in a bedroom with his daughter. This discovery led to a fatal confrontation.
Moore fatally shot the unarmed teenager in the back as he was attempting to leave the house.
The following day, Parnell's body was discovered in a grassy area of a nearby yard by a witness who then alerted the authorities. The investigation into the young man's death quickly pointed to John Moore as the primary suspect.
John Moore was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the death of James Parnell Jr. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Moore had intentionally shot Parnell and then made efforts to conceal the crime, including disposing of the teenager's clothing and shoes. The defense, however, contended that the shooting was not premeditated and should be considered voluntary manslaughter. They argued that Moore was upset and fired the shots with the intention of chasing the boy away.
After hearing testimony from various witnesses, including a neighbor, the medical examiner, and Moore's own daughter, the jury reached a verdict. In June 2024, John Moore was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the shooting death of James Parnell Jr. He was also found guilty on two counts of tampering with evidence. The conviction for voluntary manslaughter carries a potential sentence of three to six years in prison.
