On a late summer night in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 39-year-old Alvino Johnson was tragically cut short. Early on the morning of Saturday, September 3, 2016, Johnson was found shot to death along the side of a home on Leath Street. The father of six had been caught in a senseless act of violence. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, according to his grieving mother.
The events leading to Johnson's death began to unfold when Jimmiko Driskell, then 20 years old, and
another woman drove to the Leath Street residence in search of someone. An argument ensued with a group of men who were outside the house. Driskell, who had returned to the scene multiple times, then opened fire from her car window, unleashing a hail of bullets from an AR-15 rifle she had on her lap. Alvino Johnson was struck and killed during the chaotic shooting. His mother lamented that he lay there for over five hours before help arrived.
Within 24 hours of the fatal shooting, Memphis police arrested Jimmiko Driskell. She was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, two counts of criminal attempted first-degree murder, and employing a firearm during the commission of a felony. In May of the following year, a grand jury indicted Driskell on these charges. She was held without bond at the Shelby County Women's Jail East as the legal process moved forward. The case was picked up by the Special Prosecution Unit of the Shelby County District Attorney's office, which is tasked with seeking maximum sentences for repeat felony offenders.
