In Memphis, Tennessee, on March 27, 2022, a tragic incident unfolded that ended the life of 3-year-old Bryson Jackson. The young, Black male child was at his home with his 4-year-old brother when he discovered an unsecured and loaded AR-15 style pistol. Believing it to be a toy, Bryson accidentally shot himself in the head. His mother, Tinesha Jackson, had left the children in the care of an uncle while she and a friend, Tedrick Butler, were out.
Upon her return, Tinesha Jackson
discovered her son with the grievous injury and rushed him to the hospital, but tragically, he did not survive. The firearm belonged to Tedrick Butler and had been left unsecured in Tinesha's bedroom. The devastating event prompted an immediate investigation by law enforcement.
In the aftermath of the young boy's death, both his mother and her friend faced legal consequences. Tinesha Jackson and Tedrick Butler were both charged with criminally negligent homicide. Butler faced a series of additional charges, including possession of prohibited weapons and tampering with evidence. While Tinesha Jackson was initially arrested, she was later released. Tedrick Butler appeared in court where his bond was set at two hundred thousand dollars.
