In the late hours of a Wednesday night in Nashville, Tennessee, 23-year-old Denzel Charles Hammond was fatally shot while sitting in the driver's seat of his car in the parking lot of the Summerwind Apartments on Bell Road. The incident, which occurred on March 30, 2022, left Hammond's vehicle still in gear when the first Metro Nashville Police officers arrived at the scene. In an effort to render aid, officers were forced to break a window to get to him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by Nashville Fire Department paramedics.
An investigation into the shooting led detectives to two teenagers, 16-year-old Suhaela Lemelle and 17-year-old Draven Hughes. Lemelle was present at the scene when authorities arrived and identified Hammond as an acquaintance. Further investigation revealed that Lemelle and Hughes had allegedly been handling a pistol earlier that evening while discussing a plan to rob Hammond. A search of Lemelle's apartment resulted in the discovery of two firearms.
Both Suhaela Lemelle and Draven Hughes were subsequently taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide in connection with the death of Denzel Hammond. Hughes was arrested at his home following the execution of a search warrant.
