In a tragic turn of events on a Wednesday afternoon in May 2022, a prearranged meeting in the parking lot of the Valley Ridge Apartments on Harding Pike in Nashville ended in the death of 20-year-old Nicholas Spivey. The young man, a resident of the apartment complex, was involved in what detectives believe was a targeted shooting. The incident unfolded when at least two, and possibly three, individuals arrived in a silver Hyundai Sonata for the scheduled meeting with Spivey.
Evidence
suggests that the encounter was related to a drug transaction, as investigators later found drug packaging materials inside Spivey's apartment. At the time of the shooting, Spivey was carrying a significant amount of cash, totaling more than $3,200. The situation escalated when the backseat passenger of the Sonata exited the vehicle and opened fire, shooting Spivey multiple times. In a chaotic scene, men who were inside Spivey's apartment witnessed the shooting and returned fire at the assailants. The suspects managed to flee the scene in their vehicle. Spivey was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed led authorities to suspect a drug-related motive for the homicide. A search of Spivey's apartment uncovered five firearms, which included a stolen pistol and an AR-style rifle. Homicide detectives were able to identify one of the alleged gunmen as 20-year-old James Marques Smith of Nashville. An arrest warrant charging him with criminal homicide was issued, though efforts to locate him in the days following the incident were unsuccessful. The silver Hyundai Sonata used by the suspects, which was later discovered to have been stolen, was found abandoned the next day in East Nashville and was impounded by the police. The search for Smith and the other potential suspects continues as the investigation into the death of Nicholas Spivey remains ongoing.
