In the spring of 2022, a fatal encounter in an Antioch, Tennessee apartment complex parking lot ended the life of 62-year-old Nathan Barnett. On the evening of April 5th, Barnett arrived at the Apollo Apartments on Richards Road, not as a resident, but for a prearranged meeting. He was a passenger in a black Chrysler 300, driven by a 17-year-old. The purpose of their visit became tragically clear as events unfolded.
After parking, two individuals from another vehicle entered the backseat
of the Chrysler. What was intended to be a narcotics transaction, specifically involving marijuana, quickly escalated. Within minutes, the sound of gunshots shattered the evening quiet. Barnett was struck by multiple bullets and died in the front passenger seat. In the immediate aftermath, one of the individuals from the backseat fled the scene on foot, while the other drove off in their vehicle. The teenage driver of the Chrysler initially ran from the car, circled an apartment building, and then briefly returned to retrieve something before also fleeing.
The subsequent investigation by homicide detectives painted a clearer picture of the events. Law enforcement discovered approximately two pounds of bagged marijuana in a nearby dumpster, shedding light on the motive for the deadly meeting. The 17-year-old driver later, accompanied by his mother, turned himself in to the Smyrna Police Department. He was subsequently charged with evidence tampering and felony marijuana possession.
For over a year, the investigation into Nathan Barnett's murder continued. A significant breakthrough came in June 2023, when a grand jury returned a murder indictment for Jordan Davis, a 25-year-old from Murfreesboro. Davis, who was already in federal custody for unrelated gun and drug offenses, was identified as one of the two individuals who entered the Chrysler that fateful night. He is facing charges of first-degree murder, premeditated first-degree murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The second suspect involved in the fatal shooting remains unidentified, and authorities are continuing their investigation to bring all those responsible for Nathan Barnett's death to justice.
