In the spring of 2022, a violent act shattered the quiet of an Antioch, Tennessee residence, leaving one man dead and his roommate a wanted fugitive. On the morning of April 23rd, 33-year-old Jesus Camillo Perez was shot inside the home he shared with Juan Hernandez. Despite being gravely wounded, Perez managed to flee to a neighbor's house to seek help. Before being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he would ultimately succumb to a gunshot wound to the abdomen, Perez identified his 41-year-old roommate, Juan Hernandez, as the person who had shot him.
The investigation into Perez's death quickly focused on Hernandez. Another roommate who was present in the house reported hearing a gunshot before witnessing Hernandez flee the scene. Hernandez absconded in a gray Nissan Altima that belonged to another resident of the home, taking the vehicle without permission. This led to the car being reported as stolen. In that case, he had pointed a pistol at his four roommates during an argument. He was featured on Nashville's Top 10 Most Wanted list, with law enforcement actively seeking information from the public regarding his whereabouts.
