In Nashville, Tennessee, on the evening of April 6, 2022, a promising young man's life was cut tragically short. Arondai Thompson, a 20-year-old male, was a former star football player at East Nashville High School who had gone on to play at Cumberland University before returning home for personal reasons. His journey, however, came to a sudden and violent end in a parked car on Robwood Drive, leaving a community to mourn and a family to grapple with a senseless loss.
The events of that
fateful evening unfolded inside a vehicle where Thompson was present with 19-year-old Jamandas Mayberry and two other individuals. According to witnesses, multiple firearms were being passed around among the occupants. The two witnesses decided to get out of the car to play basketball, leaving Thompson and Mayberry alone in the backseat. Shortly after, a single gunshot shattered the quiet of the evening. The witnesses rushed back to the vehicle to a horrifying scene: Mayberry was seen shaking Thompson, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his upper right thigh.
In the chaotic moments that followed, Mayberry fled the scene in his own vehicle. The two witnesses, in a desperate attempt to save their friend, drove Thompson to TriStar Skyline Medical Center. Despite their efforts and the medical attention he received, Arondai Thompson was pronounced dead at the hospital. The investigation into Thompson's death moved swiftly. Based on the accounts of the two witnesses, authorities identified Jamandas Mayberry as the shooter. He was located at his home and arrested by the Metro Nashville Police Department.
