In the afternoon hours of a Friday in Knoxville, Tennessee, a young man's heroic act of intervention in a domestic dispute tragically cost him his life. John Mack Jr., a 24-year-old father of two, was fatally shot on May 20, 2022, after he stepped in to help a woman who was being threatened by an armed man. The incident unfolded at the corner of Texas Avenue and Pascal when Roshan Smith reportedly began arguing with the mother of his child while brandishing a handgun.
Witnessing the
escalating and dangerous situation, Mack chose to intervene in an attempt to de-escalate the confrontation and protect the woman. It was during this selfless act that he was shot in the head. He was placed on life support for a couple of days before succumbing to his injuries. In the wake of his death, Mack's family remembered him as a hero. Even in death, his generosity continued as his organs were donated, saving several lives.
Following the shooting, the Knoxville Police Department identified Roshan Smith as the suspect. He was taken into custody in connection with the death of John Mack Jr. Smith was subsequently arrested and faced charges for the fatal shooting. The community was left to mourn the loss of a man who was remembered for his courage and his ultimate sacrifice while trying to help another in need.
