In the summer of 2014, the life of a promising young man, John Benton Huddleston, a 21-year-old male, was abruptly and violently cut short in Knoxville, Tennessee. On the night of June 26th, what began as a home invasion at a residence on Valley View Drive turned into a fatal encounter for Huddleston. He had recently graduated from the University of Tennessee / Pellissippi Culinary Arts Institute and had dreams of becoming a master chef.
That evening, a group of five men, some of whom
knew their victims from high school, forced their way into the North Knoxville home with the intent to rob the occupants of cash and marijuana. The perpetrators were later identified as Dwaine Love, Braylen Bennett, Charles Boyd, Rodrick Curtis, and Melvin King. During the course of the robbery, chaos and violence erupted, leading to John Huddleston being shot. He was rushed to the UT Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to his injuries. Another individual, 18-year-old Syndey Smith, was also shot in the leg but survived the ordeal. A dog was also killed during the home invasion.
The investigation that followed quickly led to the identification and apprehension of the five suspects. One of the suspects, Dwaine Love, turned himself in to the police. All five men were charged with a litany of serious offenses, including first-degree murder and attempted robbery. The subsequent legal proceedings brought the full scope of the planned robbery to light. It was revealed that Melvin King was the one who fatally shot Huddleston and had even bragged about the robbery and the shootings while in jail.
Ultimately, justice was served for John Huddleston and the other victims. Four of the defendants, Braylen Bennett, Charles Byrd, Rodrick Curtis, and Dwaine Love, accepted plea deals and were sentenced to 40 years in prison for their roles in the crime. As part of their plea agreements, they were required to testify against the fifth suspect, Melvin King. Following a five-day trial, Melvin King was convicted of first-degree felony murder, especially aggravated kidnapping, attempted especially aggravated robbery, and a host of other charges. The court handed down a mandatory life sentence for the murder conviction, ensuring that the man who pulled the trigger would spend the majority of his life behind bars. The court later affirmed the convictions and the life sentences for the suspects involved in the tragic and senseless death of John Huddleston.
