In the late afternoon of July 19, 2022, a dispute between coworkers in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box on Largo Drive in South Nashville, Tennessee, ended in the tragic death of 30-year-old Keanthony Rishon Thompson. An argument that began between the girlfriends of Thompson and his fellow employee, 28-year-old Trey Scales, escalated into a physical altercation involving the two men.
Both women were also employees at the same fast-food restaurant.
During the course of the dispute, Scales retrieved a pistol and shot Thompson. Emergency services transported Thompson to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Nashville Police Department's Homicide Unit led the investigation into the shooting.
Following the incident, Trey Scales was taken into custody near the scene by South Precinct officers. He claimed to have acted in self-defense. However, investigators reviewed video surveillance of the incident and determined that his claim was not supported by the evidence.
Scales was subsequently charged with criminal homicide for the fatal shooting of Keanthony Thompson. He was booked into jail with his bond set at $250,000.
