In the late summer of 2022, the life of 20-year-old Cameron Lee Pirtle, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Jackson, Tennessee. On the afternoon of August 31, 2022, Pirtle was brought to the emergency room of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital with gunshot wounds. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
The Jackson Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the shooting.
With assistance from the community, investigators were able to identify the crime scene as Courtney Cove in east Jackson. Evidence discovered at this location led police to a residence on Rivers Street. The investigation revealed that a robbery had occurred before Pirtle was shot.
Within days, the investigation led to the apprehension of two suspects. On September 2, 2022, police arrested 18-year-old Tommy Taylor and an unnamed male juvenile in connection with the homicide and robbery. Both individuals were charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of especially aggravated robbery, first-degree murder, and felony murder. The arrests brought a swift, though not complete, sense of closure to a community mourning the loss of a young man.
