In the spring of 2021, what should have been a joyous celebration for Demethrius D. Williams, a 22-year-old African American male, ended in tragedy in Jackson, Tennessee. On the night of March 27th, Demethrius was out with friends from Lane College at Mo Zeppy's Hookah Café on Federal Drive, marking the milestone of his upcoming college graduation. The celebratory atmosphere was shattered when gunfire erupted in the parking lot. In the chaos, Demethrius was struck by bullets.
His friends rushed to get him to the hospital, but his injuries, including gunshot wounds to his neck and lung, were too severe. Demethrius D. Williams died from the shooting.
The Jackson Police Department responded to a scene littered with numerous shell casings, evidence of the violent exchange that had taken place. Their investigation into the homicide quickly pointed them toward a suspect. On June 3, 2021, law enforcement arrested Ryon Easley, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting. During an interview with investigators, Easley admitted to firing an AR-15-style rifle from the back of a gold Suburban as it was driving away from the scene of the altercation.
On May 2, 2022, a Madison County Grand Jury handed down an indictment against Ryon Easley, charging him with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated assault. The case proceeded to trial, and on July 19, 2024, a jury found Easley guilty of a series of lesser charges: second-degree murder, attempted voluntary manslaughter, employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, assault, and four counts of aggravated assault. On September 3, 2024, Judge Donald Allen sentenced Ryon Easley to a total of 31 years in prison for his role in the death of Demethrius Williams. During the sentencing, the District Attorney General noted the profound and permanent loss suffered by Williams' parents, contrasting their fate with the fact that Easley would eventually be released from prison.
