In the late evening hours of Sunday, October 30, 2022, a workplace dispute at a United States Post Office facility on Shallowford Road in Chattanooga, Tennessee, ended in a fatal shooting. The victim was identified as 30-year-old Cody Ryan Ransom, a male employee who was training to be a supervisor. The incident unfolded around 10:30 p.m. when an argument erupted between Ransom and a fellow postal worker.
The coworker, identified as 27-year-old Brian Simmons, shot Ransom multiple times
following a verbal exchange. After the shooting, Simmons fled the post office, leaving behind a scene of chaos as other employees sought cover. Police who responded to a shots-fired call discovered Ransom deceased inside the building.
Simmons's escape initiated a second tragic event. He drove his vehicle several miles away to Highway 153, where he crashed into a nail salon. When law enforcement arrived at the crash scene, they found Simmons deceased. It was later determined that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation concluded that Simmons acted alone in the murder of his supervisor before taking his own life.
