On November 24, 2022, Martel Thomas, a 27-year-old man who recently moved to Knoxville, Tennessee from Detroit, Michigan, was found shot and killed inside a car on McConnell Street in East Knoxville. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before discovering Thomas dead inside the vehicle. The Knoxville Police Department responded to the scene around 5:45 p.m. and pronounced him dead on arrival.
