The catalyst for the bloodshed is believed to have been an exchange of gunfire in the Western Heights area of the city. Following this initial incident, the violence escalated, drawing in more individuals and leading to a tragic outcome for multiple families.
The situation intensified when Perry's mother, Lisa Perry, was shot and wounded inside her
East Knoxville home. Upon learning of the shooting, Brandon Perry, along with several other men, allegedly drove to the Lonsdale neighborhood seeking retaliation. It was there that they are believed to have randomly fired multiple shots into a group of people, resulting in the death of 15-year-old Zaevion Dobson, a high school football player who was tragically caught in the crossfire.
The cycle of violence did not end there. In the early morning hours of December 18, 2015, Perry was driving his car when he was pursued and shot multiple times by unknown individuals. The assault caused him to crash his vehicle into an apartment building. Perry succumbed to his gunshot wounds a short time later.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash and Perry's death, police investigated the chaotic scene. Two other men who were in the car with Perry fled after the crash. One of these men, Christopher Bassett, was apprehended by police and subsequently arrested. Investigators believed the string of shootings was gang-related. Another man, Kipling Deshawn Colbert, Jr., was sought by police as a person of interest who they believed might have information about the shootings.
