In the early morning hours of February 1, 1991, a knock at the door shattered the quiet of a Knoxville, Tennessee home. Inside, 40-year-old Jackie Cardwell rose to answer the summons. His wife, resting in bed, heard him speaking with a man before the sharp, deafening blast of a shotgun echoed through the house. When she rushed to the door, she found her husband grievously wounded. He was transported to the UT Medical Center, but the injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
