In the early morning hours of February 1, 1991, a knock at the door shattered the quiet of a Knoxville, Tennessee home. Inside, 40-year-old Jackie Cardwell rose to answer the summons. His wife, resting in bed, heard him speaking with a man before the sharp, deafening blast of a shotgun echoed through the house. When she rushed to the door, she found her husband grievously wounded.
