In the summer of 1990, Philadelphia Police Officer Joaquin Montijo Jr., a 35-year-old male, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. On June 13th of that year, Officer Montijo responded to a disturbance call on Fairhill Street, near Lycoming Street. Upon his arrival, he encountered a man brandishing a pistol. Officer Montijo instructed the individual to drop the weapon, but the man instead opened fire.
Officer Montijo was grievously wounded, having been shot in the head.
He was rushed to the hospital, where he remained on life support for two days. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Joaquin Montijo Jr. succumbed to his injuries on June 15, 1990. He was a dedicated officer who had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for a year and seven months. He left behind a wife and three children.
The man responsible for Officer Montijo's death was identified as Michael LaCava. LaCava was subsequently arrested and stood trial for the murder of the officer. A jury found him guilty of the crime, and he was initially sentenced to death. However, following an appeal, LaCava received a new sentencing hearing. The outcome of this hearing was a life sentence in prison.
