Robert Porter, a 28-year-old male police officer with the Philadelphia Police Department, was tragically shot and killed on the night of January 19, 1996. Officer Porter, who was off-duty at the time, was in the company of another off-duty officer when they were approached by three men outside of Scooter's Lounge, a sports bar located at 38th and Lancaster streets.
The suspects, who had recognized the officers as police officers, initiated an argument and subsequently opened fire on the officers' vehicle as they attempted to drive away.
Officer Porter was struck in the head and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The other officer, who had previously testified against one of the suspects earlier that day, was the intended target but survived the attack. The suspects, identified as Brian Young, a 19-year-old black male, and Dwayne Brown, a 22-year-old black male, were arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and several other related offenses. The third suspect remained at large, and an investigation continued to determine his whereabouts.
The case garnered significant attention due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the shooting and the fact that Officer Porter had served as an undercover narcotics officer for seven years. His death marked the third shooting of a Philadelphia police officer within the same month, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement officers even when off-duty. The suspects were eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Porter was survived by his stepson, two siblings, and parents, who mourned the loss of a dedicated and brave officer. His death left a lasting impact on the Philadelphia Police Department and the community, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
