In the spring of 2016, a violent encounter in South Philadelphia's Point Breeze neighborhood claimed the life of 26-year-old Jessie Williams. On the afternoon of Friday, April 29, Williams was inside his 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee on the 2000 block of Wharton Street when a shootout erupted. The gunfire left Williams fatally wounded. Responding officers found him inside his vehicle, and he was rushed to Jefferson Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 5:06 p.m.
Another man, who was a passenger in Williams' Jeep, sustained minor injuries to his head and face when the vehicle crashed into two parked cars following the shooting. He was treated at Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center and subsequently released. The investigation into the shooting quickly led police to a second scene nearby on the 1200 block of Point Breeze Avenue.
There, they located 26-year-old Tysheed Davis, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his finger. Authorities determined that Davis had shot Williams, and that Williams had returned fire, striking Davis. Two firearms were recovered by police, one from inside Williams' vehicle and another from the street.
Following the investigation, Tysheed Davis was arrested and charged in connection with Jessie Williams's death. The charges filed against him included murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and various firearms offenses.
