Fassara Kouyate, a 37-year-old man, was working his second job at the Lehigh Car Wash, located near Broad Street and Lehigh Avenue in Philadelphia, on the afternoon of June 23, 2008, when he was tragically killed. An immigrant who had moved to the United States from Mali in 2000 to find work and join his uncle and brother, Kouyate was known by his loved ones as an easygoing man who brought laughter to those around him.
On that Monday, robbers targeted the car wash in a deadly hold-up.
Despite complying with their demands and handing over the money, Fassara Kouyate was shot. His wife, Yvonne Woods-Kouyate, later recounted the painful event, stating that they still took his life even after he had given them what they wanted.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police began their investigation, believing that more than one individual was involved in the robbery and subsequent murder.
