JaMiyah Nicole Butler, a 4-year-old girl from Chester, PA, tragically lost her life on October 28, 2004. JaMiyah was sitting in the back seat of a car with her friend, 3-year-old Damya Baez, while their mothers were in the front. They were on their way to pick up pizza when shots rang out in the 900 block of Tilghman Street in Chester. Stray bullets struck JaMiyah in the head and Damya in the leg. The girls' mothers drove immediately to Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
Damya was treated at Crozer and recovered; however, JaMiyah was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she died eight days later.
Within days of the incident, 17-year-old Charles Stanley of Chester was charged in JaMiyah's death. The case drew significant attention due to the young age of the victim and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The community in Chester, deeply affected by the tragedy, has continued to honor JaMiyah's memory through various memorials and events.
