In the fall of 2007, a 54-year-old Philadelphia Police Officer, Charles Edward Cassidy, a man known as 'Chuck' to his friends and colleagues, was a familiar and reassuring presence in the neighborhoods he patrolled. A 25-year veteran of the force, he was known for his calm demeanor and the relationships he built with local business owners. On Halloween morning, October 31, 2007, Officer Cassidy made a routine stop at a Dunkin' Donuts on Broad Street, a place he checked on regularly due to a
recent robbery.
Unbeknownst to him, as he approached the entrance, an armed robbery was in progress inside. As Officer Cassidy opened the door, the robber, later identified as John 'Jordan' Lewis, turned and fired a single shot, striking the officer in the head. The gunman then stole Officer Cassidy's service weapon and fled the scene. Officer Cassidy was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day, November 1, 2007.
A massive manhunt was launched for the suspect, with tips pouring in from the community. The search for Lewis extended beyond Philadelphia, and on November 6, 2007, he was apprehended in Miami, Florida, after a 911 call led police to a homeless shelter where he was hiding. Lewis, a 23-year-old from North Philadelphia, was extradited to face justice.
In a surprising turn of events in November 2009, John 'Jordan' Lewis pleaded guilty to the murder of Officer Cassidy. A jury later found him guilty of first-degree murder. During the sentencing phase, the court heard emotional testimony from Officer Cassidy's family. Lewis expressed remorse for his actions before he was sentenced to death by lethal injection on November 24, 2009.
