In the winter of 2013, a night of celebration ended in tragedy for a Philadelphia family. Darrell Banks, a 47-year-old African American man, was walking home from a birthday party in North Philadelphia on January 4th when his life was cut short. The father of ten was fatally shot by plainclothes police officers.
According to the police account of the incident, Mr. Banks matched the description of a suspect in an armed home invasion that had recently occurred.
They stated that when officers attempted to stop him, he fled and then pointed an object at them. In response to this perceived threat, an officer discharged his weapon, striking Mr. Banks once in the left side. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
