On the morning of January 18, 2023, Carlos Alberto Merced, a 56-year-old Hispanic male, was at his place of work, an auto body shop in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia. Known to his loved ones as 'Page,' he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. His life was cut short when a dispute escalated into deadly violence.

An argument broke out between Merced and another man, identified as Jose Ortiz Rodriguez. During the confrontation, Rodriguez allegedly shot Merced multiple times. The shooting occurred just after 8:20 a.m. at the auto body shop located on the 4300 block of Josephine Street. Merced sustained gunshot wounds to his chest, stomach, arm, and buttocks.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and police officers arrived to find Merced gravely wounded. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Within hours of the fatal shooting, law enforcement apprehended Jose Ortiz Rodriguez in connection with the crime. Rodriguez was subsequently charged with murder and weapons offenses, as he had a prior felony conviction that prohibited him from legally possessing a firearm. He was denied bail.
