In a quiet community in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the life of James E. Deneen Jr., a 36-year-old male, was brought to a violent and tragic end in September 2014. The initial discovery was a grim one: firefighters responding to a vehicle fire on a remote road in Londonderry Township found human remains inside the burned-out car. The victim was soon identified as Deneen, a resident of Hyndman and a father.
An investigation quickly revealed that he had not perished in the fire but had been shot in the head.
The ensuing police investigation unraveled a story that began with a drug deal. Authorities determined that Deneen had arranged to meet Jonta St. Clair Bishop, an 18-year-old from Hagerstown, Maryland, for a marijuana transaction. The meeting took a fatal turn when Bishop shot Deneen in the head. Following the murder, which occurred in the driveway of a home in Buffalo Mills, Bishop enlisted the help of several acquaintances to cover up the crime. With the assistance of Kimberlee Sue Forbes, her son Nicholas Forbes, and Domenick Gillespie, Bishop moved Deneen's body into the trunk of a car. The group then attempted to clean the crime scene of evidence, including washing away blood and burning stained clothing. Bishop drove the vehicle to the remote location where he set it ablaze with Deneen's body inside.
The investigation led to the swift arrest of Bishop, who was charged with homicide, arson, and other offenses. Initially, he claimed to have acted in self-defense, alleging that Deneen had a gun. However, his story changed multiple times during police interviews. The three accomplices, Kimberlee and Nicholas Forbes and Domenick Gillespie, were also arrested and faced charges for their roles in the cover-up, including arson, evidence tampering, and abuse of a corpse. Another individual, Krissie Thompson, was later charged for allegedly arranging the drug deal that led to the fatal encounter.
To avoid a potential death penalty, Jonta St. Clair Bishop ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, robbery, arson, and abuse of a corpse. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing the nearly three-year case to a legal conclusion. His three accomplices all accepted plea deals. Kimberlee Forbes was sentenced to two to four years in prison, Nicholas Forbes received a sentence of three to six years, and Domenick Gillespie was sentenced to two and a half to five years. As part of their plea agreements, they were expected to testify against Bishop had his case gone to trial. The motive for the murder appeared to be Bishop's intent to steal the marijuana from Deneen.
