In the winter of 2015, a life was tragically cut short in a nightclub parking lot in Beaumont, Texas. Rubin D. Williams, a 41-year-old man, was killed on December 26, 2015, following a dispute. The incident, which took place outside the OK Rodeo Disco Club, escalated into a fatal shooting.
The investigation into Williams' death led authorities to Darrell Paul Williams. Though they shared a surname, the two men were not related.
Evidence, including a cell phone video of the altercation, pointed to Darrell Williams as the perpetrator. According to reports, his wife was also involved in the initial dispute and left the scene with him after the shooting. For a time, justice for Rubin Williams seemed delayed as Darrell Williams was already facing legal troubles for unrelated federal charges.
In February 2017, while a murder warrant for Rubin's death was active, Darrell Williams was arrested by Beaumont Police for his involvement in a series of organized bank robberies across Texas. Following his conviction on federal charges, he began serving a seven-year sentence. However, the charge for Rubin Williams' murder remained.
The legal proceedings for the murder charge were not straightforward. The first trial in May of an unspecified year ended in a mistrial. A second trial commenced, and this time, a Jefferson County jury found Darrell Paul Williams guilty of the murder of Rubin Williams. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison for the crime. The conviction brought a sense of closure to Rubin Williams' family, who had waited a long time for justice to be served.
