Khalil Shoatz, a 25-year-old African American man from Philadelphia, PA, was tragically shot and killed on July 29, 2016. He was a loving father of three children and was known for his generosity and caring nature. Khalil paid the registration fees for seven boys who wanted to join the West Philly Panthers football team but whose families couldn't afford it.
Unfortunately, he never got to see them play as he was fatally shot in the Mantua section of West Philadelphia.
On the night of his death, Khalil was with a friend when they were both shot. His friend survived, but Khalil did not. The police were called to the scene around 11 p.m., but despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with his murder. Khalil's mother, Sue Shoatz, believes that the shooter had some sort of argument with her son prior to the killing. The City of Philadelphia has offered up to $20,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
In the wake of Khalil's death, his family has set up a foundation called Khalil's Voice to honor his memory and continue helping other children in need. The foundation aims to reach out to youth and provide support for families of murder victims. Sue Shoatz has been vocal about her son's character, describing him as a loving, caring, and responsible young man who was taken away too soon.
Despite the tragedy, Khalil's legacy lives on through the foundation and the memories of those who knew him. His family and friends continue to remember him and honor his life in various ways, including releasing balloons and sharing prayers on what would have been his birthday.
