In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Philadelphia, the grounds of Martin Luther King High School became a scene of tragedy. On September 22, 2024, a passerby discovered the body of 16-year-old William Erik Honesty II, a Black male, and police were summoned to the 5900 block of Stenton Avenue just after 11:30 p.m. for a report of an unconscious person. Arriving officers found the teenager lying outside the school, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.
Medical personnel were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:46 p.m. Honesty lived within walking distance of the high school, though he was not enrolled as a student in the School District of Philadelphia.
The initial investigation into the young man's death began with an unknown motive, and for a time, no arrests were made. The Philadelphia Police Department urged the public for assistance, offering a significant reward for any information that would lead to an arrest and conviction in the case. Detectives worked diligently, examining video footage and tracking cellphone data in an effort to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting and to identify a person of interest.
Months later, in December 2024, the investigation led to a significant breakthrough. Police arrested 19-year-old Shyd Carr-Hanks, a resident of the same East Germantown neighborhood. After being taken into custody, Carr-Hanks was charged with murder and various weapons offenses in connection with Honesty's death. Authorities also confirmed that a weapon was recovered during the arrest. The case is now pending trial.
