Thomas Petersen, a 32-year-old male of unspecified ethnicity, tragically died on January 24, 2017, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His death was the result of a violent carjacking and murder committed by Khalif Tuggle. On the day of the incident, Tuggle shot Petersen in the chest, dragged him out of his car, and left him on the road while fleeing in Petersen's vehicle.
Despite the efforts of two Philadelphia Police Officers who rushed Petersen to Temple University Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Petersen's death led to the arrest and eventual conviction of Khalif Tuggle. Tuggle was indicted by a grand jury on charges of carjacking, use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and murder in the course of using a firearm. He pled guilty to all three counts and was sentenced to 55 years in prison. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Joseph LaBar and Michael Miller.
