In the early evening of June 10, 2020, in Savannah, Georgia, 17-year-old Latanya 'Taye' Williams, an African American female, was tragically killed. A rising junior at Beach High School, she was known for her kind and compassionate spirit.
That evening, Latanya was in a car with her 27-year-old cousin and two other male acquaintances. They had just pulled into the driveway of a house on Staley Avenue when another vehicle approached and opened fire.
Numerous shots were fired into the vehicle, fatally wounding Latanya and injuring her cousin. It is believed that Latanya was not the intended target of the shooting.
The Savannah Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. In the months that followed, the community mourned the loss of the teenager. Friends and family remembered her as a caring individual with a big heart.
In November 2020, authorities identified a suspect in the case. Parcardi Trappio was charged with the murder of Latanya Williams. At the time the warrant was served, Trappio was already incarcerated at the Chatham County Detention Center on unrelated charges.
