In the early morning hours of June 26, 2015, a tragedy unfolded in an East Savannah neighborhood that would claim the life of 62-year-old Rosalyn Maria Chapman. Officers from the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were dispatched to a residence on Mosley Street at 2:44 a.m. following a report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival at the home, they were met at the door by 55-year-old Edwin Lawrence Chapman. Inside the house, police discovered two women who had been shot. Rosalyn Maria Chapman was found with a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second victim, 54-year-old Odetta Hampton, was also found with a gunshot wound and was transported for medical treatment. All three individuals resided at the same address.
Edwin Lawrence Chapman was immediately detained by the patrol officers who were first to arrive. As the investigation into the double shooting progressed, he was subsequently arrested and charged. The initial charges filed against him included two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Authorities indicated that additional charges could be forthcoming as the investigation continued.
