Calvin Turner, a 20-year-old male from Pittsburgh, PA, tragically lost his life on August 8, 2017. Turner was shot and killed at Terrace Village, a housing community on Oak Hill Drive in Pittsburgh's Hill District. The incident occurred in the evening, and a private security guard working in the area reported hearing three gunshots before seeing a suspicious man, later identified as Tevin Patterson, fleeing the scene.
Patterson, a 27-year-old man from Uniontown, was arrested shortly after the shooting by Pittsburgh police officers who found him without shoes or a shirt in a nearby wooded area. Investigators later discovered a sweatshirt with blood splatter and a Nike shoe in the woods, which matched the evidence found at the crime scene. Patterson was charged with first-degree murder and burglary.
In October 2021, an Allegheny County jury found Tevin Patterson guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Calvin Turner. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional seven to 14 years for a firearms count. The judge also ordered Patterson to serve time for the burglary charge.
The case brought attention to the issues of violence and crime in the Hill District, and the community mourned the loss of Calvin Turner, a young man with his whole life ahead of him. The conviction of Tevin Patterson provided some measure of justice for Turner's family and friends, although the pain of losing a loved one remains.
