Vanderlee Stevenson, a 32-year-old resident of East Liberty, Pittsburgh, was fatally shot on August 24, 2008. Police were dispatched to the 5600 block of Wellesley Avenue in Highland Park shortly after midnight, responding to a 911 call reporting an intruder in an apartment. Upon arrival, officers discovered Stevenson lying on the kitchen floor with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at 12:48 a.m.
The apartment where the shooting occurred was part of a 2.5-story beige brick house, which was owned by Alex B. Oshoko. The property was partially rented out, and neighbors reported frequently seeing Oshoko's son on the premises. At the time of the incident, no one else, including the person who made the 911 call, was present at the scene. The police have not identified any suspects, and the investigation into Stevenson's death is ongoing.
Neighbors expressed shock and concern about the incident, especially given the otherwise quiet nature of the area. Vanderlee Stevenson had prior legal troubles, including an arrest in 1991 for rape, later reduced to an assault charge, along with other minor offenses such as possession of marijuana and drunken driving. The police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact the homicide office as they continue their investigation.
