In the early morning hours of September 26, 1997, a team of parole agents arrived at a home on East Lippincott Street in Philadelphia. They were there to arrest 26-year-old Kenneth Griffin for a parole violation. Inside the dimly lit basement of his mother's house, Griffin was asleep with his girlfriend and their two children. Awakened by his mother's calls that the agents had arrived, Griffin hid, unarmed and naked, under a bed.
What happened next unfolded in a tragic and contested
sequence of events. According to his family, as Griffin emerged from under the bed to surrender, he was shot multiple times by two parole agents, Robert Martinez and Isaac Hickson, in front of his girlfriend and children. The family maintained that he was unarmed and posed no threat. The parole officers, however, told a different story. They contended that Griffin suddenly faced them, said 'I can't go back,' and fired a handgun at them, prompting them to return fire. In the ensuing chaos, Griffin was shot six times and died in the basement. Investigators never found a revolver at the scene, and the only bullets recovered were from the officers' weapons. The agents suggested that a relative of Griffin may have removed his gun from the scene. Following the shooting, prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to press charges against the officers. Although a city judge later ordered the officers to face charges, that decision was ultimately overturned on appeal. Griffin's family filed a lawsuit against the agents, alleging they had killed an unarmed man. In March of 2003, a federal court jury deliberated for three days before clearing the two parole officers of any liability in Kenneth Griffin's death.
A separate and later tragedy befell another Philadelphia man named Kenneth Griffin. On September 27, 2017, this 32-year-old Black male became a victim of the city's ongoing gun violence. In the Kensington neighborhood, Griffin was fatally shot. The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately clear, and the Philadelphia Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the case of this Kenneth Griffin remains unsolved. No arrests have ever been made in connection with his death, and no suspects have been publicly identified. His name is memorialized in projects dedicated to honoring the lives lost to violence in the city, a stark reminder of the many unresolved cases and the lasting impact on the community. The investigation into his murder is ongoing, with police continuing to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough and bring a measure of justice to his family.
