In the early morning hours of September 6, 2021, the life of 24-year-old Elijha Matravouis McDuffie, a Black male from Greer, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded at a Greenville nightclub, where a dispute escalated into fatal violence. McDuffie was pronounced dead at the scene, having sustained a gunshot wound.
The Greenville County Sheriff's Office swiftly launched a homicide investigation.
Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, Aaron Messiah Hodari Harper, who was 22 years old at the time. Investigators determined that McDuffie and Harper were acquainted, though the specific nature of their relationship and the motive for the shooting were not immediately clear. Within days of the shooting, Harper was located and taken into custody.
Following his arrest, Aaron Harper was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The case then proceeded through the legal system. In addition to the criminal charges, the family of Elijha McDuffie filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the nightclub where the shooting occurred, alleging inadequate security measures. The lawsuit claimed that Harper was allowed to enter the establishment with a concealed firearm. The legal proceedings in both the criminal and civil cases sought to bring a measure of justice for the untimely death of Elijha McDuffie.
