Symir was fatally wounded in the hail of gunfire. He was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. His young friend was shot in the leg but survived the attack. Symir, who had just completed his freshman year at KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy, was remembered by his mother as a lovable and naturally funny person with a contagious smile who dreamed of playing basketball for Temple University. In the aftermath of the shooting, Philadelphia police began an investigation.
