On the evening of August 22, 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on a street corner in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood, leaving two men fatally wounded. One of these men was Jose Vega, a 38-year-old Hispanic male. The incident occurred at approximately 7:54 p.m. near a corner market at H and Thayer Streets. Vega, a resident of the 800 block of East Thayer Street, was struck by multiple gunshots.
Philadelphia Police officers who responded to the scene transported him to Temple University Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The attack was carried out by at least two individuals who arrived in a gold Chevrolet Uplander. One of the assailants, later identified as 38-year-old Mario Ramirez, exited the vehicle armed with an assault rifle and opened fire. The shooting was described as callous and cold-blooded, with dozens of shell casings found at the scene. Another man, 23-year-old Anthony Torres, was also killed in the shooting. The area was crowded at the time, and several other people, including two young children, were present during the attack.
For several years, the case remained under investigation. A significant breakthrough came on March 15, 2023, when Philadelphia Police arrested Mario Ramirez in connection with the murders. Following a week-long trial in October 2025, a Philadelphia County jury found Ramirez guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy. In January 2026, he was sentenced to serve consecutive life-in-prison terms without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing hearing, Vega's daughter spoke, remembering her father as someone who was 'always there' for her. While Ramirez was convicted and sentenced, authorities have stated that a second man who was in the vehicle with Ramirez and also fired shots has not been charged, and the investigation remains ongoing.
